2026 Kick Off

It’s May 2026 and Dry Season is about to kick off so I wanted to get down a few goals and ambitions. It doesn’t matter that I achieve them all but it helps knowing what gear to grab when certain conditions present so I maximise my water time. Plus I want to encourage other foilers.

BLAST

At the start of the season, the main deal will be blasting across Fannie Bay from Lake Alex to the Sandbar on the morning ‘knock-em-down’ bullets. I’ll use a long mast, high aspect front and tail, and my super comfy 5ft board. Fannie Bay handles low tides well so you don’t have to walk too far even with a 90cm mast. Darwin’s competitive race crew will be showing how its done.

I’m really keen to repeat the run across Ludmilla Bay up to KC/Casuarina. I’ll use a high aspect glidey wing to handle the wind holes, and gloves and neoprene to keep warm.

BUMPS

July and August sends in the best swells, nice and clean in the morning with light offshores. In these conditions there are two variations I want to try; both use a big high aspect front foil.
1. Dump & Pump – stiff carbon board, grunty wing with Anchorman sea anchor. Get foiling in light breeze, dump the wing, and practice pumping on the swells.
2. SUP Foil – downwind board with 60cm mast and big front foil. Paddle onto the micro waves in the creek mouth with the Saturday morning SUP crew.

Lake Alex FW Paddleups – another option for the downwind board is flat water paddle up on the lake or glassy mornings at Casuarina. This will require serious dedication to crack but its staying on the list.

CARVE

On hotter days when the seabreeze kicks in at 10 knots plus, and the tide is right, the sandbars at Rapid Creek mouth deliver heaps of fun sunset sessions. September can deliver northerlies which means you can put in at Cas Surf Club, sail north towards Lee Point, and ride the bumps back. My fave carving setup is a midlength board, 1000 – 1200 sq cm front, carvey tail, and short fuse with 72 or 80cm mast.

Lets do this 2026!
