WIND FOIL

  • Due to Darwin’s often light and very gusty winds, larger-sized windsurfing foil boards are preferable as they can accommodate much larger sails. Together these assist greatly with getting up on the foil, and to keep on planing through the inevitable lulls
  • In the Dry Season most sailing is in offshore winds. Larger boards offer a greater safety margin when the wind unexpectedly drops off – not ‘if’ but ‘when!’
  • A floatier board will allow you to tack all the way home even when not up on the foil
  • Usually a minimum of 10 knots is needed to get a wind foil board up planing. All else being equal, a lighter sailor will get up on the foil in less wind than a heavier rider
